Here is what I learned today:

Two new ideas about mythology:
1. Ancient Greeks honored the gods in many ways (gifts, animal sacrifice...). They also honored them through competitions. The Olympic Games were held in Zeus' honor. In Athens, people competed to write and perform the best plays.
2. The gods weren't interested in good and bad, and they didn't always act justly and fairly. They had humans who they liked to help and others that they bullied.

One navigational strategy: On the Winged Sandals website there is a great navigational tool. If you click on the link that says "navigate" there are 7 different topics you can look at. (For example: story time, play games, make and do, history, etc...)

One reliable source: The Winged Sandals website has an "about" section that shows the credits for the websites information. Their credits include a University of Melborne team and an ABC New Media & Digital Services Production Team.

One informational feature: On the Winged Sandals website there are four games that you can play. At first they tell you about important people in Greek mythology, and then you play a fun game.

Exploring Mythology

Internet Researcher: Date:

Today you will have the opportunity to explore the internet to find out information that will help you understand the book Vacation under the Volcano better. You will research the interesting topic of Mythology. I have selected to websites that will help you learn more about Mythology, and they will also help you answer the questions below.

1. Go to the bookmark I have set for you on the Winged Sandals website (http://www.abc.net.au/arts/wingedsandals). I want you to click on the box that says navigate, and then click on the link that says history. You should read through this section and find something that interests you about the Roman Gods. You should write down what you found out and be ready to share it with the class.

2. Explore the website! You can go to any link you wish, but I want you to look for any ways that this website and the book Vacation under the Volcano are similar. For example, is there anything in this website about Roman gods and goddesses? Explore this topic and write down your response. I also want you to write where on the website you found this information.

3. Explore another website about Greek myths (http://storynory.com/category/greek-myths/). I want you to read all of the myths on this page. Then I want you to get creative and come up with your own Greek myth! You’re going to need another sheet of paper, but I want you to brainstorm ideas on the lines below. Be creative!

4. Now I want you to explore the website and choose your favorite Greek Myth. I want you to draw a picture of what you think would be a great cover if the myth was a book. I also want you to include Jack and Annie in the picture as well. Maybe they went on another adventure!
